Saint Paul's Cross

Saint Paul's Cross
A stone cross in open space on the north-east side of *St Paul's Cathedral, first recorded in the 12c. It was by the cross that sermons were delivered, making it the pulpit of the cathedral and London. Around it, the London *folkmoot would meet to hear proclamations, papal bulls etc. read out. In one corner there was a belfry whose bell was used to summon Londoners. This was also the place where the men of London met before going out to battle, led in hereditary right by the lord of Castle Baynard. -
